A friendly teen sleepover in Georgia turned tragic when a gun apparently accidentally discharged, killing a 19-year-old woman.
Sebastian Prestridge, 19, faces an involuntary manslaughter charge in the October 9 shooting death of Nina Ramirez, WSB-TV 2 reported. The woman's mother, Maria Carmen Ramirez, said she believed the shooting was accidental.
"They were playing with the gun," Ramirez told the station, adding that no one had checked to see if it was loaded.
Lawrenceville Police said that Prestridge has been cooperating with investigators. Police said that there also were witnesses to the shooting who had provided statements regarding what happened.
"This is an incredibly tragic situation, and our hearts go out to the victim's family and loved ones," said Captain Dena Pauly, Public Information Officer for the Lawrenceville Police Department. "Our investigators are working diligently to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding this young woman's death."
Ramirez said that Prestridge and her daughter were dating. She and that her daughter was very happy with him.
"He used to come in and he show that he was so nice. He showed he loved her," she told the station. "When you get mad and these things happen, you want to find something guilty [or] someone guilty, but I think it was just an accident."
