The Chicago-area surgeon accused of murdering his ex-wife and her husband in Ohio faced a malpractice accusation just months before the killings.

Michael McKee, 39, faces two counts of aggravated murder with premeditation in the deaths of Monique and Spencer Tepe. The Tepes were found in their Ohio home on Dec. 30 from gunshot wounds. Two young children in the home were left unharmed.

In September 2025, McKee, a vascular surgeon, was accused of malpractice, according to PEOPLE.

According to a complaint filed in Clark County Court and cited by PEOPLE, McKee oversaw a surgery that went awry and resulted in an 8.6-inch catheter breaking off in a patient's leg.

PEOPLE quoted the complaint as stating the patient endured "numerous adverse sequelae." The complaint alleges the blunder led to "lower extremity bleeding, edema, pain, discoloration, disfigurement, and other injuries."

The outlet reported that the patient's attorney had trouble locating McKee to serve him, with a process server noting that McKee had "just disappeared."

When McKee was arrested this month, he had a Chicago address and was working in Rockford at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The Tepes married in 2020, about three years after Monique's divorce from McKee. McKee and Monique Tepe were married from 2015 to 2017. The couple had no children, and the divorce was finalized about a month after it was filed in 2017, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

The Tepes were found Dec. 30 after Spencer failed to show up for work at the Dental Depot. Two children, ages 4 and 1, were found in the home crying but unharmed. There were no signs of forced entry at the home, and no weapon was found at the crime scene, ABC-6 reported.

According to PEOPLE, police in Ohio identified a suspect through surveillance video and tracked that person to a vehicle that had arrived in the area right before the homicides and departed shortly thereafter.
