Los Angeles Police believe Rob Reiner's son murdered the famous director and his wife Sunday, possibly after an argument.
Reiner, 78, and his wife, Michele, 68, were found Sunday dead in their Brentwood mansion. The Los Angeles Times reported that their son, Nick Reiner, 32, was in custody and being questioned at 9:15 p.m. and that he was booked into the county jail at 5:04 a.m. on suspicion of murder.
According to PEOPLE, Nick Reiner had a long history of substance abuse and addiction. His first stint in rehab happened when he was 15. For a time, he ended up homeless before finding his way back to his family.
Nick Reiner wrote a screenplay about his struggles with addiction, which was turned into the 2015 film Being Charlie, directed by his father.
At the premiere of the film, Rob and his wife told the times that they had previously wondered "if there was an end in sight, and whether it would be the tragic one that a voice in the back of their heads kept telling them was coming."
At the time, Rob Reiner described the film as being therapeutic.
"Now, I've been home for a really long time, and I've sort of gotten acclimated back to being in L.A. and being around my family," Nick told PEOPLE in 2016.
Police told the LA Times that there were no signs of forced entry at the Brentwood home.
According to TMZ, the murders occurred after an argument. The website reported that the couple had their throats slit. Their bodies were found around 3:30 p.m. by one of their daughters who called police. The website reported that the daughter told police that a family member "should be a suspect" and that the family member was "dangerous."
As an actor, Reiner played Archie Bunker's son-in-law in the hit sitcom All in the Family. As a director, he created beloved films including The Princess Bride (1987), When Harry Met Sally... (1989), Misery (1990), and A Few Good Men (1992).
The Guardian reported that Reiner met his wife, Michele, a photographer, on the set of When Harry Met Sally... In a 2018 interview with the newspaper, Reiner talked about how his relationship with Michele changed the ending of the film. "Originally, Harry and Sally didn't get together. But then I met Michele and I thought: OK, I see how this works," he said.
