A recent court filing suggests a step sibling might be a suspect in the mysterious death of Anna Kepner, who died aboard a cruise ship earlier this month.d
Kepner, 18, died on the Carnival Horizon cruise ship on Nov. 7 while she was vacationing with her family. The ship had left Miami for the Caribbean but returned to port on Nov. 8. Although the FBI began investigating, little information regarding her death has been made public.
However, NBC News reported that a court filing related to a past marriage of Kepner's stepmother, Shauntel Hudson, suggests that a stepbrother of Kepner's might face "criminal" charges.
The filing requests that testimony be paused in the case because the FBI had alerted Hudson that one of her children was under criminal investigation, NBC News reported. The network reported that the filing states that Hudson "has been advised through discussion with FBI investigators and her attorneys, that a criminal case may be initiated against one of the minor children of this instant action."
According to NBC News, the circumstances would prevent Hudson from being able to testify in that case. Previously, The Daily Mail reported that Kepner was found by a maid, stuffed under a bed, wrapped in a blanket, and covered with life jackets.
Kepner was a high school senior and varsity cheerleader who planned to enter the military when she graduated.
"She had just finished taking the test to join the military," the family told ABC News. "She was already talking to recruiters and had chosen her career path. She wanted to do something that would help her community."
