A North Carolina couple who took in a teen as part of foster care were found brutally murdered in their own home on Monday, according to authorities.

Joann Nicole Chavis, 46, and Ted Matthew Chavis, 53, were found dead in their Red Springs home from numerous stab wounds, police said. Officers were called to the home by a person who said someone was in "cardiac arrest," but when officers arrived they found the couple murdered.

The 17-year-old foster child, identified by police only as D.P., was not at the home when police arrived at around 6:04 p.m. Police said that D.P. was considered a suspect in the double homicide, and authorities were able to track him to the Lake Waccamaw area.

"When approached by officers, D.P. committed suicide from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound," police said.

Police said that the State Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation in Columbus County regarding the suicide.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Chavis family, and everyone affected by this tragic incident," stated Sheriff Roderick Virgil. "We are grateful for the assistance provided by our partnering agencies throughout this investigation."
