A 73-year-old Florida man tried to stab his family to death because he was "trying to get 'em up to heaven," according to police.

Allison Hatton faces an attempted murder charge for the October 12 attack on a 69-year-old relative. The relative awoke to Hatton stabbing her in the chest and neck, police said.

Hatton later told police that he had planned to kill the adult relative, himself, and his dog. Law & Crime reported that Hatton told police that "he was tired of everyone suffering and intended to kill his entire family, including the dog."

According to police, after Hatton stabbed the 69-year-old relative, another person intervened and was able to get the knife away from him. Hatton proceeded to get another knife and threatened to kill the second relative if she didn't allow him to kill his initial victim. Hatton then stabbed himself in the throat.

Family members told authorities that Hatton regularly saw doctors at the VA and that they had not diagnosed him with any mental disorders. However, the family stated that Hatton was being fed through a feeding tube because he was refusing to eat, Law & Crime reported.

Hatton was transported to the Wakulla County Jail where he was charged with one count of attempted felony murder, aggravated battery on a person over 65 years of age, and one count of assault with the intent to commit a felony.
