A Texas man is in custody after allegedly admitting to killing his wife and hiding her decomposing body in their home, telling investigators, "go big or go home."
Charles Byrd, 49, was arrested in San Antonio this weekend after a relative reported that he had confessed to hurting his wife, 44-year-old Angela Byrd, according to People. Responding officers with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office entered Byrd's home and found what Sheriff Javier Salazar described as "human remains wrapped up in materials."
Authorities believe the remains belong to Angela but are awaiting official confirmation from the medical examiner regarding identity and cause of death.
According to investigators, Byrd initially fled the home and was found hiding at a nearby residence. Salazar said other individuals were also taken into custody during the operation, though no additional details were released. Once detained, Byrd allegedly told police he and his wife had a "physical confrontation" around June 16 that led to her death. He reportedly made no effort to report the incident and instead lived in the home with her body for weeks, taking steps to conceal the smell.
During questioning, Byrd allegedly made light of the situation, stating, "go big or go home," and emphasized that he had no prior criminal history. "I just found that very very shocking," Salazar said of the comment. While being led away by authorities, Byrd told local station KSAT, "I'm so sorry. I loved my wife," adding that he had suffered a "mental break."
Byrd remains in custody and has not requested legal representation.
