A 28-year-old pizza delivery driver was shot in the head and killed after delivering an order to a vacant apartment in a North Philadelphia housing complex late Friday night, police said.

According to Philadelphia police, officers responded to reports of gunfire at the Raymond Rosen Homes on the 2300 block of Edgley Street shortly after 12:30 a.m., where they found the victim lying on the ground unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head.

He was taken to Temple University Hospital and pronounced dead just before 1 a.m., authorities said. Police have not publicly released the man's name, but said he was 28 years old and worked for Pete's Pizza, according to People.

Investigators said the delivery had been placed in a unit in the housing complex that was supposed to be unoccupied. Inside the apartment, officers found three unopened pizza boxes and a delivery bag that appeared untouched, leading detectives to believe the driver had completed the delivery before he was attacked outside.

Ballistic evidence, including three spent shell casings, was recovered just inches from where the victim's body was found, police said, the Economic Times reported.

Surveillance video reviewed by detectives reportedly shows the driver walking toward the building with pizza boxes while being followed at a distance by at least two individuals dressed in dark clothing.

Investigators believe the shooting occurred shortly after the driver left the vacant unit, but they have not yet released a detailed description of the suspects seen in the footage. Detectives are working to determine whether the order was placed as part of a setup to lure the driver to the location.

Police said no weapon had been recovered and no arrests had been announced as of the weekend. The motive remains under investigation, with detectives probing whether robbery or another form of targeted violence may have been involved.

Authorities emphasized that the person who ordered the food has not yet been publicly identified, and they are examining phone records and ordering platforms as part of the case, as per ABC13.

The Philadelphia Police Department's homicide unit is leading the investigation and has asked anyone with information or relevant surveillance footage from the area around Edgley Street to come forward.

A reward of up to $20,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case, officials said. Tipsters can contact the homicide unit directly or submit information anonymously through the city's tip line.
