This weekend, a private investigator plans to lead a group of volunteers in a hunt for the knife used to kill four University of Idaho students in November 2022.

Bryan Kohberger, 30, is accused of killing the four students and is expected to go on trial this summer. At the time of the killings, Kohberger was a Ph.D criminology student at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, located about eight miles from the crime scene.

The murder weapon used in the slayings never was found and, according to Fox 13, a private investigator plans to find it this weekend with the help of community volunteers.

"I think there's a good probability that the knife would be found on the route between Moscow, Idaho and Pullman, Washington, along the routes of highway 95 and then north up highway 195," Jason Jensen, a licensed private investigator with 30 years of experience, told Fox 13.

The search area will span a 35-mile. "Dear Moscow and Pullman residents. Come help us in the community search for the missing Ka-Bar knife this Saturday and Sunday June 21 to 22nd," Jensen wrote in a Facebook post.

Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20, were stabbed to death at an off-campus home near the University of Idaho in the early morning hours of Nov. 13, 2022. The murder weapon in the crime never was recovered, but police did say they found a knife sheath at the scene. Prosecutors have asserted that DNA on the sheath can be tied to Kohberger.

"If we find it, the thing to do is freeze what we're doing, back out of the scene, call the police, have them come down and process it as a follow-up crime scene, because there may be other evidence present, not just the knife," Jensen told Fox 13.
