Accused Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann targeted prostitutes because they were "easy" targets, according to a friend of Heuermann.
Heuermann, 61, a former New York architect, has been charged in the murders of seven women. In an interview with the New York Post, a long-time friend of Heuermann's speculated on how and why he chose his alleged victims.
"I don't think it's because he has a hatred of sex workers. It's that they were easy targets for him," David Jimenez told the newspaper. Jimenez had known Heuermann since 2006.
"I'm not a psychiatrist, but I don't think it's the fact that they're hookers is the reason he's killing. I think he's killing him because he wanted to kill," Jimenez told the Post. "And they were the easiest prey."
Jimenez is interviewed in the Peacock documentary about the case "The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets." The documentary promises to provide insight into Heuermann, with interviews with family and friends, including Asa Ellerup, 61, Heuermann's wife.
Heuermann has denied any wrongdoing, but police say he began killing prostitutes and dumping their bodies along Gilgo Beach's Ocean Parkway on Long Island in the 1990s.
