Georgia police are searching for answers after a 37-year-old man went on a killing spree and then took his own life.
Dalton Police say that on Wednesday, Kevin Andrew Akins shot and killed his wife, 35-year-old Rebeca Nicole Akins, at her apartment. Police say that he then drove to the apartment of his girlfriend, 33-year-old Cindel Mae Rhoden, and shot and killed her before committing suicide.
Rebeca Nicole Akins' body was not discovered until Friday when the woman's concerned coworkers contacted the police.
"After being unable to get anyone to come to the door, officers were let into the residence by apartment staff and discovered the woman's body with an apparent gunshot wound to the head," police said.
Police eventually found Kevin Andrew Akins' vehicle at another apartment complex in the early morning hours of Saturday. While police were waiting for a search warrant to enter the apartment, a man arrived and entered the apartment with a key.
"Police later learned that he was the second victim's father and had come to the scene to check on her after she had not been heard from for a few days. The man then came back outside and called 911 to report that he'd found his daughter and another man shot to death," police stated.
Police have not said what the motive was for the shootings or what precipitated them.
"Cindel was in a relationship with a man who was married to his estranged wife and she fell victim of manipulation and in a devastating turn of events, he took the life of his wife, then drove to Cindel's home to kill her, and ultimately took the cowards way out and took his own life," states a GoFundMe page set up to benefit Rhoden's daughters.
"Cindel was more than just a victim of this tragedy she was kind, full of life, and a devoted mom doing her best for her girls. Her daughters are now in the care of family, but they need help."
Rebeca Nicole Akins family also has established a GoFundMe to help pay for her funeral costs.
"My older sister Nicole was tragically taken away from us by the man she had loved for over half of her life. This has broken all of us beyond words. That is all I will say on that matter," the page states.
