A Phoenix elementary school teacher facing felony charges after allegedly peeing into a can during class gave a bizarre explanation for his behavior.

Curtin Hinton, 52, faces felony indecent exposure charges, 12 News reported. The station reported that Hinton resigned just days after the alleged incident.

Three students reported the March 17 incident to the principal, although a fourth student also witnessed what happened. Quoting court documents, the station reported that the students "stated they heard what sounded like water falling and looked over to visually witness, Mr. Hinton urinating into a bottle."

The students who witnessed the event were three 11-year-old girls and a 12-year-old boy.

Fox 10 reported that students told police they saw Hinton's penis before he adjusted his pants and belt. However, Hinton, while admitting he peed in a can, told officers he was covered properly at the time.

Hinton reportedly told police that he peed in the can because he did not know how to get in contact with another teacher to watch his class, so he did what he did in the military when he had to stay in a location.

"While there is no specific policy solely addressing teacher restroom use, it is standard practice for teachers to ensure appropriate coverage for their classrooms when they need to step away briefly," Wilson Elementary School District said in a statement, according to the station. "This typically involves coordinating with a neighboring teacher, instructional aide, or school administrator to ensure students remain supervised."
