A South Carolina man facing execution for murdering his ex-girlfriend's parents will "pay for what he's done," the victims' grandson said.
Brad Sigmon, 67, is set to die by firing squad on Friday. Sigmon was sentenced to die in 2002 after being convicted of beating his ex-girlfriend's parents, David and Gladys Larke, to death with a baseball bat. He also kidnapped the ex-girlfriend, Rebecca Barbare, and planned to kill her too, but she was able to escape, Greenville News reported.
"He's going to pay for what he's done," the Larke's grandson Ricky Sims, told the Greenville News. "I used to like him (Sigmon), but he took away two people who would have done anything for their family. They were the rock of our family. It was a senseless thing that happened; there was no need for it; they didn't deserve it and were good to him."
Sigmon and Barbare had been in a relationship for about three years, living in a trailer near the Larkes home. When the relationship ended, the Larkes attempted to get Sigmon off the property. Eventually, Barbare began seeing someone else and Sigmon broke into the Larke's home and beat David, 62, and Gladys, 59, with a bat, killing them, the newspaper reported.
"It was a shock. I had spent time with him (Sigmon). They (his grandparents) tried to get the situation resolved and get him out the house before anything was to happen, but it all fell through," Sims, who was 17 at the time, told the newspaper.
In his confession, Sigmon stated, "I couldn't have her. I wasn't going to let anybody else have her," the Associated Press reported.
Sigmon's execution will be viewed by witnesses through bullet-resistant glass as three volunteers from the department of corrections shoot him. The shooters will stand 15 feet away and will be shielded from view by a wall. The witnesses will have a side view of the execution, according to state documents.
