The trial of a Florida man prosecutors say killed his girlfriend and nearly drowned a baby is coming to its conclusion.

In 2022, Ja 'Kolbi Jacsaint allegedly shot his girlfriend Jazzmine Brayboy, 22, to death. He then drove her vehicle into a canal, hoping to submerge it with Brayboy's 5-month-old goddaughter inside, The Sun Sentinel reported.

A passerby saw the partially submerged vehicle and attempted to save Brayboy and the child, CBS Miami reported. At the time of the incident, police stated that the good Samaritan was able pull the baby and Brayboy from the car before first responders arrived. The baby was reunited with its family and is now three.

According to the Sun Sentinel, police were able to use surveillance cameras and cellphone records to zero-in on Jacsaint and place him at the scene of the crime.

Jacsaint, who was 17 at the time of the killing, faces one count of first-degree murder and faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted. Prosecutors rested their case on Monday.
