‘Die Hard 6’ News: Len Wiseman admits challenges of finding actor to play young John McClane; Bruce Willis' return confirmed

'Die Hard 6' is an upcoming action film directed by Len Wiseman. He admitted that it was a challenge to find a new actor who could play a young John McClane. The lead protagonist has always been played by Bruce Willis, who is returning to reprise his role in the new film.

According to Empire, Wiseman is returning to helm the sixth film in the 'Die Hard' franchise after directing leading man Bruce Willis in the 2007 release 'Live Free or Die Hard'. Wiseman's sequel earned $385 million against a $110 million budget at the box office and was received with generally positive reviews.

The filmmaker is best known for his work on the supernatural thriller series, 'Underworld', with ex-wife Kate Beckinsale. He also directed 'Total Recall' starring Beckinsale, Colin Farrell and Jessica Biel and served as producer for films such as 'Sleepy Hollow' and 'Max Steel'.

The upcoming film will reportedly tell the story of lead protagonist John McClane's origin story. Wiseman revealed that it was a challenge to find a new actor to portray the a younger version of the character Willis was always known for.

He said, "It has to be somebody that has the swagger and the confidence, but also the charm, the wit, the charisma and the toughness... It's asking a lot, especially in somebody that's younger. It has to feel like the guy owns it, rather than is trying to put it on."

According to Toronto Sun, Willis has signed on for a part in the new film. He was reportedly only going to do a cameo but Wiseman admitted that Willis will do more than just make an appearance.

Wiseman said, "I wasn't going to do it without Bruce. I'm also not going to do it with Bruce being a cameo bookend gimmick. It's really working into the plot, with the '70s having ramifications on present-day Bruce... It intercuts in a very fun, imaginative way with present-day John McClane... The film itself will take place on New Years' Eve 1979, so trying to gear things towards that would be fun."

The plot for 'Die hard 6' will most likely revolve around John's love story with Holly in 1970s New York City, according to Cinema Blend. The two were introduced as an estranged couple - John in New York while Holly in Los Angeles with their children. Wiseman said that it would be interesting to explore their relationship further.
