Iowa police say that a scientist was stabbed to death by her husband in a premeditated attack.

Amber Nicole Martin, 41, was allegedly stabbed to death by her husband, James Fuller Martin, 47, on Friday, Muddy River News reported.

According to a criminal complaint, authorities believe the attack was planned by James. The complaint states that he "formulated a plan to kill the victim" in the hours leading up to the murder. It further states that he "retrieved a kitchen knife and surprised the victim as she exited another room." The complaint states that James admitted to stabbing the victim and that the evidence supported his statements regarding what had happened.

The incident happened around 6:30 a.m. and James arrested at the scene.

Amber was the Medical Laboratory Scientist Supervisor of Microbiology at the University of Iowa Health Care. Before that, she worked at Quincy Medical Group with her husband, who was the Hematology Coordinator there, the Muddy River News reported.

"My entire staff and I are shocked and horrified by Amber's death," Connie Floerchinger, MS, MHA, University of Iowa Health Care told the Muddy River News. "She was sweet, smart and had an amazing personality. She had only been with us since September, but we all feel like we had known her forever! Our community and the field of clinical microbiology will not be the same without her."
