A California man gunned down his wife in front of their teenage son, telling him, "this is what happens when you cheat," according to police.
Manuel Leal Robles, 37, faces first-degree murder and child cruelty charges, KGET-12 reported. The incident unfolded November 26 while Robles and his wife, Ana Karen Robles were having drinks.
The station reported that an argument began and the couple's 15-year-old son attempted to intervene. According to the station, police reports indicate that Manuel Leal Robles grabbed a gun and fired several rounds into a gun safe.
PEOPLE reported that, according to court documents, Robles left the room only to return later with an AR-15 rifle. The outlet reported that Robles said, "this is what happens when you cheat," before repeatedly shooting Ana.
According to PEOPLE, Robles then put the barrel of the gun in his mouth but did not fire it. The son wrestled the gun away from him. The son also prevented his father from stabbing himself in the kitchen.
Robles fled but was arrested at a mall. He later told authorities that he had drunk two bottles of vodka that day and had blacked out, PEOPLE reported.
"I f---ed up, my wife cheated on me, and I f---ed up," Robles told arresting officers, according to PEOPLE, which cited court documents. "She made a mistake, and I killed her for it." He also told officers that his wife "didn't deserve that."
Robles has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail, PEOPLE reported.
