According to Local 10, police said that inside the restaurant, Smith became agitated and complained that her son had been "disrespectful."

PEOPLE reported that, according to court documents, Smith and her son had begun arguing inside the restaurant. The argument continued after they got in the car. PEOPLE reported that according to court documents, Smith then pulled out a gun, and her son got out of the car.

"Once outside the vehicle, [Smith] discharged a single round, striking the victim in the left thigh," the affidavit cited by PEOPLE states.

Smith told police that she acted in self-defense because her son threatened to beat her and refused to get out of the car, PEOPLE reported. She told authorities that she got out of the car and then he got out and began to follow her.

Smith has pleaded not guilty.
