The man accused of assassinating Charlie Kirk bragged about his Wordle guess less than an hour before slaying and later implored friends to watch the news.
Kirk, 31, was shot and killed while speaking at Utah Valley University on September 10. Tyler James Robinson, 22, has been charged in the case and could face the death penalty if convicted.
Kirk was the founder of Turning Point USA, a conservative organization that focuses on reaching out to young people on college campuses. Kirk started the organization when he was 18 and was considered a political ally to President Donald Trump.
The Washington Post interviewed 21 people who knew Robinson and also reviewed hundreds of messages between Robinson and his friends. The newspaper noted that less than an hour before the murder, Robinson was messaging a friend about Wordle, bragging that he had gotten the word "pouty" in just three tries.
According to the newspaper, about 80 minutes after the shooting, Robinson texted a friend saying "you see this news?????"
Robinson then sent another message, "utah gets a national headline for the first time in a while and it's someone sliming charlie kirk."
The Washington Post story extensively covers Robinson's online activity, his friendships, his extensive gaming, and his dating of his transgender roommate. When President Trump survived an assassination attempt in July 2024, Robinson reacted with what his friends thought was a joke.
A friend messaged Robinson, "Assassination attempt on Trump". Robinson responded, "snowflake liberals cant shoot straight cause they too busy being gay".
