A Connecticut man admitted that he beat his mother to death with a hammer but said he didn't know why.

Sebastian Van Stockum, 20, called 911 following the incident and admitted he had killed his mother on Friday, Fox 61 reported. Van Stockum is charged with murder.

"I want to turn myself in," Van Stockum reportedly told dispatchers before he started to cry. "I just killed my mom, and I don't know why I did it."

The network reported that first responders found a 55-year-old woman outside the home with severe head trauma. They began treating her, but she ultimately was pronounced dead at the scene.

As police in New Canaan escorted Van Stockum out of the home, police body camera footage recorded him confessing, "She's dead...I did it...I did this to her," Fox 61 reported. Later, Van Stockum reportedly said, "I deserve to suffer."

WFSB-3 reported that the woman had blunt-force trauma to the left side of her head. The woman's skull was cracked, and police found a hammer covered in blood next to the woman's head.

In a mug shot of Van Stockum released by the New Canaan Police Department, his face is covered in scratches. Once inside a police cruiser and under arrest, Van Stockum reportedly told officers that he was not mentally well.
