A dispute over a Trump sign led to gunfire in what one North Carolina man says is a sign of our polarized political times.
In an interview with Fox News this week, Mark Thomas described how he saw a man begin tearing down a Trump sign at his 87-year-old mother's home. According to Thomas, the man, who had a mask over his face, abruptly stopped his Jeep Cherokee, exited the vehicle, and began pulling the sign down on September 6.
"Being a Second Amendment believer, I reached over, grabbed my rifle and took off out there to the porch," Thomas told Fox News.
According to Thomas, he fired two warning shots in the air. The man, Benjamin Michael Campbell, 38, retreated to his vehicle before returning fire through the sunroof.
Thomas told Fox News that Campbell left but came back a short time later and opened fire on the residence, with one bullet penetrating the home and striking a refrigerator.
Campbell, who is an accountant from Atlanta, Georgia, was eventually charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury, discharging a firearm within an enclosure to incite fear, and willful and wanton injury to personal property, WLOS 13 reported.
After being arrested, Campbell was extradited back to North Carolina where his bond was set at $70,000, WLOS 13 reported.
Thomas told Fox News he was surprised to learn that Campbell was a professional in his mid-30s. "Some of these people, they just see a Trump sign, and they just snap. The whole time I'm thinking, 'This is some 20-year-old kid, and he's going to figure it out eventually,'" Thomas told Fox.
