The man accused of assassinating Charlie Kirk has hired a defense attorney who once represented Lyle Menendez during his mistrial.
Kirk, 31, was shot and killed while speaking at Utah Valley University on September 10. Tyler James Robinson, 22, has been charged in the case and could face the death penalty if convicted.
Kirk was the founder of Turning Point USA, a conservative organization that focuses on reaching out to young people on college campuses. Kirk started the organization when he was 18 and was considered a political ally to President Donald Trump.
PEOPLE reported that during a September 29 court appearance, Robinson was represented by three attorneys, including Michael Burt. Burt represented Lyle Menendez during his first trial. Menendez and his brother Erik, were accused of killing their parents in 1989. Although eventually found guilty, Lyle's first trial ended in a mistrial.
The defense team is led by attorney Kathryn "Kathy" Nester. Aside from Burt, Richard Novak will also serve as a co-counsel with Nester on the case, PEOPLE reported.
PEOPLE reported that Burt has also worked on other high-profile criminal cases. His experience also includes representing Eric Robert Rudolph, who was convicted of planting a pipe bomb at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta that killed one person and injured 100. Burt also represented serial killer Richard Ramirez. Ramirez was known as the "Night Stalker" and killed 15 people in 1984 and 1985.
