The parents of a child reported as kidnapped have stopped cooperating with police and have hired a lawyer, according to reports.

Rebecca Haro told police in California that she was standing outside of her vehicle, changing 7-month-old Emmanuel's diaper, when she was assaulted. Haro told authorities on August 14 that she was knocked out, and when she came to, Emmanuel was gone.

However, over the course of the investigation, investigators say that they discovered "inconsistencies" with her version of events.

"Rebecca was confronted with inconsistencies in her initial statement and declined to continue with the interview. At this point in the investigation, investigators are unable to rule out foul play in the disappearance of Emmanuel," police stated.

KTLA 5 reported that the child's grandmother, Mary Beushausen, confirmed that the parents are no longer cooperating with investigators and have hired a lawyer. The station reported that this occurred just hours after the couple had made a public plea for help regarding the missing child.

"He's just a baby," Jake Haro, the child's father, says in the interview with KTLA 5, tearfully clutching a picture of the missing child. "Just give back our son, please."

Beushausen told KTLA 5 that the parents loved their 7-month-old and would never have hurt him. She insisted the parents are innocent of any wrongdoing. She also told the station that Rebecca was asked to take a lie detector test, but Jake declined until they had a lawyer.
