The search for a missing Kentucky boy came to a tragic end when authorities found his body in a shallow grave.
Police found Jayden Spicer, 10, near Canoe Road in Breathitt County on Tuesday buried in a shallow grave, the Lexington Herald Leader reported. The boy's mother, Felicia Gross, 33, of Jackson, faces several charges including second-degree manslaughter and abuse of a corpse.
"We are devastated and collectively broken over this," Breathitt County Commonwealth's Attorney Miranda King said, according to the newspaper. "Jayden is now in good hands, and we're going to take care of him," she said.
The family originally reported the boy missing on Aug. 6 and told authorities that they believed he had disappeared overnight, FOX 56 reported.
Police received new information this week and shifted the search to the Canoe Road area, located about 19 miles from the boy's home.
"This incident has now transitioned from a missing persons investigation to an active and ongoing criminal investigation. With that, we must advise that specific details regarding this investigation cannot be released at this time. It is our top priority to protect the integrity of this investigation to seek justice for Jayden," Trooper Matt Gayheart told FOX 56.
