Las Vegas police say that a man shot his landlord after being handed an eviction notice.

Christopher Rainey, 36, faces murder and assault charges related to the May 29 shooting, 8 News Now reported.

Police said they were called to the residence at about 4:46 p.m. When officers arrived, they asked anyone inside to come out. One of the people who exited was Rainey, who was armed with a firearm. Police arrested Rainey.

"Through the course of the investigation, detectives learned that the victim had served Rainey with an eviction notice. This upset Rainey, and after a brief verbal exchange, he shot the victim several times," police said in a statement.

Another person who lived at the home and wished to remain anonymous said they had known the victim for 15 years. "He was my friend, and he didn't deserve to die like this," the roommate told 8 News Now.

According to the roommate, Rainey had lived there for about two years and had recently lost his job. Rainey also was behind on his rent.

"He was asked what was going on, and he just snapped," the roommate told the station.
