A Kansas City jury might finally decide whether an accused serial killer is sane enough to stand trial for his alleged crimes.
Fredrick Scott was arrested in 2017 for a series of six killings. Five of the six victims were white men between the ages of 54-67. They were shot on or near Indian Creek Trail. The sixth victim was a homeless woman who police believe might have looked like a man because of how she was dressed, KSHB-41 reported.
Since Scott's arrest, his trial has been delayed several times due to questions about his mental competency. Now, his attorneys are asking for a jury to settle the matter.
In February 2025, Scott was found competent to stand trial. His attorney's then asked for another evaluation, which, according to the family members of some of the victims found Scott not mentally competent, KSHB-41 reported.
A hearing on the defense's request for a trial on Scott's mental competency is scheduled for May 30.
"I will say, I can't speak to the specifics of any pending case, I won't do that, but I will say that particular case has been extremely, extremely high frustration on our end because we've been ready, we've been ready," former Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker told the station before she left office.
