A Kansas City woman who police say attacked and killed a paramedic in an ambulance now faces murder charges.
Police allege that Shanetta Bossell, 39, fatally stabbed Kansas City Fire Department paramedic Graham Hoffman, 29, in the heart Sunday morning as she was being transported to a hospital in the back of an ambulance, PEOPLE reported.
"I ask all Kansas Citians to keep the Hoffman family and our brave first responders in your prayers," said Mayor Quinton Lucas. Hoffman had been with the department since 2022.
PEOPLE reported that Bossell pleaded not guilty and is scheduled for a bond hearing Monday.
Police came across Bossell walking on the shoulder of a highway. According to PEOPLE, Bossell had a laceration on her finger and was bleeding profusely. She declined a ride home but did say she would go to the hospital in an ambulance.
A short time later, police saw the ambulance pull over. According to court documents quoted by PEOPLE, the ambulance driver heard Hoffman call for help and say "she has a knife." When the driver opened the doors of the ambulance Hoffman said, "she stabbed me in the heart."
"Today, we mourn the loss of Firefighter Paramedic Graham Hoffman, a brave public servant who dedicated his life to helping others. His courage, compassion, and commitment to our community will never be forgotten. On behalf of the City of Kansas City, I extend our deepest condolences to Graham's family, loved ones, and all members of the Kansas City Fire Department. We stand with you in this time of unimaginable loss," said Interim City Manager Kimiko Gilmore.
