An Illinois man who allegedly hid a dead woman in a container on his property for two months said he did so because he thought he might get into trouble.

Jose Luis Mendoza-Gonzalez, 52, has been charged with concealment of a death, abuse of a corpse and obstructing justice related to the death of 37-year-old Megan Bos, ABC-7 reported.

Bos was reported missing March 9, and police questioned Mendoza-Gonzalez because she had regular contact with him. ABC-7 reported that Mendoza-Gonzalez told police that Bos came to his house Feb. 19, took drugs and asked if she could hang out in his basement.

According to WGN-TV, Mendoza-Gonzalez told police he left to fix a leaky pipe and when he returned Bos was dead of a drug overdose, although Mendoza-Gonzalez did not know what type of drug she took.

The station reported that at first, Mendoza-Gonzalez left Bos in the basement. Eventually, he moved the body to the container. He also told police he broke her phone and threw it away.

WGN-TV reported that an autopsy did not find any obvious signs of trauma or indications of a struggle. Police are awaiting the results of a toxicology report.
