A New York man is facing murder charges after police say he killed his in-laws and their dogs before setting their home on fire.

Robert J. Buda, 34, faces murder, arson, and animal cruelty charges in the case, according to police. Police were called to the home in Wappinger around 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 26. They found the home engulfed in flames and, after the fire was extinguished, found the bodies of Paul and Jo-Ann Hait, ages 63 and 65, police stated.

Buda was the Hait's son-in-law, News 12 reported. Police have not released a possible motive in the killings.

The Times-Union newspaper quoted an unidentified woman on Facebook saying, "I can not fathom why anyone would want to hurt these two incredibly kind souls. You were truly a light of friendship, kindness and love, and you both genuinely restored a little faith to humanity in my heart."

Buda was remanded to the Dutchess County Justice and Transition Center in lieu of $500,000 cash bail or $1,000,000 bond.
