The young son of a Michigan hairstylist is still asking for his mother and doesn't understand what has happened.

Ashley Elkins, 30, disappeared on Jan. 2. Roseville, Michigan, police believe she was murdered and have charged her ex-boyfriend, DeAndre Booker, with lying to investigators.

Police searched Pine Tree landfill, which accepts trash from across southeastern Michigan, for Elkins body. The search lasted several days and included volunteers from 14 different police agencies, but they were unable to find her body.

Booker, 32, was charged on Jan. 9 and is being held on a $250,000 bond, Click on Detroit reported. A judge denied a request to lower the bond on Jan. 22. The station reported that police said they found clues in a dumpster at the apartment indicating that Elkins had been murdered.

Also, PEOPLE reported that police had told them that a search of Booker's home turned up evidence of a violent encounter.

Elkins had two sons aged 7 and 10. The outlet reported that the younger son still doesn't understand the implications of what has happened.

"He's still asking for her," Elkins' mother Monika Elkins told PEOPLE. "[We] came back from the vigil, he [said] 'Is mom coming out? Is she, is she gonna call? He doesn't understand at all."
