Edward de Grazia, a lawyer known for defending literary icons in their battles against censorship, particularly in the 1950s and '60s, has died. De Grazia helped to defeat government bans on well-known and censored books.
The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit to California educators over getting adequate English language instruction. State and federal law are requiring schools to teach non-English speakers the language, but California, according to the suit, is not offering instruction to nearly 20,000 students. The suit also alleges that the lack of instruction meant that some children were held back a grade or forced to live with low proficiency scores because of a language barrier.
