Shooting Carneys Point: Police Shoot Suspect at New Jersey Traffic Stop (Video)

New Jersey officials said that police officers shot a suspect after a routine traffic stop turned violent in Carneys Point, New Jersey at about 1. A.M. early Wednesday morning, ABC-WPVI reported.

The traffic stop is located on South Pennsville Road and Hollywood Avenue. Police pulled over two men to check on a report of a stolen car. The men then ran, as police chased them to a nearby wooded area, reports indicated. Officials then said one suspect soon fired on officers with a Tek 9 automatic weapon, which did not hit any of the officers, who then fired back. The suspect was hit three times, and is being treated Cooper University Hospital, listed in critical condition, as of Wednesday afternoon.

The second suspect fled on foot into the wooded area, and is reported as on the run, according to ABC NewsThere were no injuries to police, officials said. I-295 remained open but the stretch of of South Pennsville Auburn Road and a stretch of Georgetown Road remained closed, NBC10 Philadelphia reported.

Carneys Point is right across the Delaware River from Wilmington, Delaware.

Search dogs, state police and other area police were brought in to assist in the search, which included combing large wooded areas.
