On Thursday, 16-year-old Gabrielle ‘Gabby’ Douglas won the gold medal in the individual floor exercise round at the London Summer Olympics 2012. The 16-year-old, who has become noted for her acute talent and beaming smile became the first African American woman to take home the gold medal for the all-round Olympic Champion.

On Thursday, the United Nations and Arab League envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan announced his resignation due to rising complications with his six-point peace plan in solving the Syria crisis. Annan told CNN News that “increasing militarization on the ground" and "the clear lack of unity with in the UN Security Council”
Judge Edward Burmila dismissed a petition for mistrial in the Drew Peterson case, Peterson is being charged with first-degree murder of wife # 3 Kathleen Savio. Despite the confidence of Joel Brodsky, Peterson's attorney, who told reporters last month that the case was bound to be a mistrial, Judge Brumila disagreed.
