A man made a horrifying discovery while visiting the beach in Washington with his family for Father's day.
Kevin Ewing was at Dash Point Beach at Dash Point State Park with his wife and their two children when he happened upon a box that was seemingly gift-wrapped. Ewing had been walking ahead of the rest of his family while searching for feathers, according to the Kent Reporter.
The box was wrapped in green cloth and had a yellow string tied into a bow around it. Ewing used his pocket knife to open the box up and first came across a feather, grass that had been burned, sage, lavender and tobacco. He then noticed a rag with something inside it.
Upon unwrapping the rag, he realized it contained a severed human toe.
"I set the box down on the ground, I believe, and I used my knife to pick the rag up and open it, and it was a severed human big toe that was in there," Ewing said. "At first I was very shocked, and it took me a few minutes to kind of be like, 'is this what I think it is?' Then once it dawned on me that that's what it was, I set everything down."
Ewing also noticed a dead seagull corpse nearby the box. The seagull appeared to have been mutilated in an unnatural way, with its body seemingly having been skinned.
He took photos of what he had found and returned to his wife to tell her about the incident. He then reported it to a park ranger, after which Washington State Patrol (WSP) arrived and took over the investigation.
"You don't expect to find something like that every day, or any day, especially on Father's Day, when you're out with your family," Ewing said.
The WSP investigation revealed that the toe likely belonged to an adult male.
"Just very odd. The toe definitely did not look like it was amputated. It definitely didn't look like a surgeon had taken it off. It didn't look like a very clean medical cut," Ewing said.
