A former NICU nurse in Virginia has been charged with malicious wounding and child abuse after multiple premature babies in her care were found with "unexplained fractures."

The investigation began in November and December 2024 after three infants in the Henrico Doctors' Hospital neonatal intensive care unit suffered fractures under suspicious circumstances, KFOR reported.

In the summer of 2023, four other eerily similar cases of unexplained fractures were reported.

Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman, a 26-year-old nurse employed at the Richmond hospital since 2019, was implicated after law enforcement reviewed video footage and revisited prior cases.

Strotman was arrested on January 2, and was charged with malicious wounding and felony child abuse.

The hospital has temporarily stopped NICU admissions out of caution while Henrico Police continue to investigate.

Meanwhile, detectives are meticulously reviewing hours of surveillance footage from the NICU, working alongside local, state, and federal agencies.

The hospital is cooperating fully and has vowed to support affected families and staff.
