An Indiana woman is under arrest for allegedly driving a school bus while intoxicated, following a months-long investigation into concerning reports from student passengers about their former bus driver.
Kayla I. Pier, has been arrested on charges of operating while intoxicated and neglect of a dependent following an investigation into a Sept. 20 incident where she allegedly drove a school bus carrying 32 students while under the influence, according to the La Porte County Sheriff's Office.
Pier drove a route between a middle school and elementary school for the La Porte Community School Corporation (LPCSC).
Deputies said students reported concerns about Pier's driving and demeanor. The LPCSC Transportation Director intercepted the bus at Riley Elementary, immediately removing Pier from service. She resigned from her position later that day.
Subsequent toxicology reports allegedly revealed evidence of intoxication, prompting LPCSC administrators to notify law enforcement. A months-long investigation, including witness statements and video evidence, culminated in a probable cause affidavit being filed on Dec. 19, the sheriff's office said.
Pier turned herself in on Dec. 27 and was released on bond after being booked into the La Porte County Jail.
La Porte County Sheriff's Office Captain Derek J. Allen commended the students who reported Pier's behavior. "Their attention to detail and prompt actions may have prevented a tragedy from occurring," Allen said.
"Our district maintains rigorous standards for all transportation employees, including mandatory random drug and alcohol testing, regular credential verification, and ongoing safety training," LPCSC said in a statement.
"While this incident is deeply troubling, it has reinforced the importance of fostering an environment where students feel empowered to report concerns," LPCSC added.
The case remains ongoing.
