A Florida man allegedly used a kitchen knife to stab his longtime roommate several times without provocation while he slept on their couch, police say.

Lazara Arteaga Cuello, 54, has been charged with second-degree attempted murder and tampering with physical evidence, according to jail records.

It's unclear if he has entered a plea.

Arteaga Cuello was arrested Thursday at the Miami apartment he shared with his roommate.

Officers responding to reports of a man bleeding outside the apartment encountered the victim with multiple stab wounds to the face, arms and hands, police said, according to WPLG-TV. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment where he was last known to be in stable condition.

The victim told police that he and Arteaga Cuello were roommates who had known each for 35 years. He said he was asleep on the couch at the time of the purported spontaneous attack, according to police.

Apartment surveillance footage allegedly captured Arteaga Cuello stabbing the victim as he tried to flee.

A motive remains unclear, police say.
