An Alabama man is incurring thousands of dollars in medical debt as he fights for his life after being hit by a gunshot intended for someone else.

Cody Goff was sitting in the back of a Mobile, Alabama bar on Oct. 20 when according to Mobile Police, an altercation occurred between a woman and a man identified as Michael Sullivan. Sullivan allegedly shot at the woman but missed, striking Goff instead.

The victim's sister, Candice Goff, said her brother spent 24 hours on a ventilator and has undergone surgery to have nearly a foot and a half of his large and small intestines removed, and a damaged vein tied off.

"Even though like he's been through these two big surgeries and has got to where he's able to walk," Goff told WALA, "We don't know if in the next five days, if everything is going to like crash, and it's terrifying."

Goff has started a GoFundMe for her brother, which she hopes "can get him through the next few months as we try to figure out what's next."

"All these medical bills are piling up and no one's thinking about it, but you have to," she said.

The alleged shooter is charged with first-degree assault and out on $25,000 bond.
