California Voters Getting Closer to Marijuana Legalization for Recreational Use

The issue on legalizing medical marijuana for recreational use in California is now going on a much stronger path. It now treks on towards the November 8 ballot, and will continue to be so until further clarification.

As per LA Times, a certain movement that involves the former Facebook President Sean Parker last Tuesday said that there is already an affirmed 600,000 signatures which is more than enough to qualify for the said purpose. Democratic Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, as well as other supporters of the initiative are ready to jump-start the campaign for voter approval of Adult Use of Marijuana Act in San Francisco.

According to LA Weekly, Newsom was quoted on his statement, saying, "This November, California voters will finally have the opportunity to pass smart marijuana policy that is built on the best practices of other states, includes the strictest child protections in the nation and pays for itself while raising billions for the state."

It was noted by Follow News that the said coalition is composed of some law enforcement and civil rights leaders in which 365,880 signatures are said to be collected from registered voters to qualify. It would also place a 15 percent tax on retail sales of the said drug. The use of marijuana in public while driving is said to also remain illegal.

Napster co-founder Sean Parker gave a certain amount of $1 million to the campaign for the signature collection. However, there are still some officials that consider the supposed action perilous to the community. Oppositions such as the Citizens Against Legalizing Marijuana are already on the move for the contradiction of the said legalization.

Once the elections officials confirm that the signatures given will be sufficient, California will join other areas such as Colorado, Washington, Alaska and Oregon as states that permit the recreational use of marijuana. So far, 55% of voters are calling for its further legalization.
