For a while, CBS gave the impression that it was still considering to continue with "The Good Wife" after the current Season 7. It came as a surprise therefore when the network made an official cancellation announcement of the series on its Super Bowl 50 broadcast on Sunday.

It was reported earlier on that the show's creators, Robert and Michelle King, already announced that they would be leaving after "The Good Wife" Season 7 according to The Atlantic. However, it looked like CBS might continue with the show without them. It is now reported that Robert King only heard of the cancellation himself within the week of Super Bowl.

However, there have been some hints that CBS was actually going to pull the plug on the show. For one, Robert and Michelle King have already started working on their next TV series after "The Good Wife" reports Inquisitr. Set to premiere on CBS this summer will be their comic thriller titled "BrainDead".

Meanwhile, IB Times reports that lead star Julianna Margulies released a press statement following the cancellation announcement where she spoke about how playing Alicia Florrick for seven seasons has meant to her. According to her, being in the show has been one of the most rewarding experiences of her career. She added that as an actress and producer, she is honored to be a part of a show that throughout its seven years on air has strived to be extraordinary and not just settled on being just good.

"The Good Wife" made its debut in 2009 and was initially dismissed as just another salacious drama taking off from political headlines where a wounded wife stands by her politician husband as he confesses to an affair. However, with its audacious storylines and one of the best casts on television that centered on the dynamic Margulies, it broke free from the stereotype. It has won five Emmys and the Television Critics Association award in 2014.

The early announcement of CBS should give "The Good Wife" the proper ending for Alicia Florrick. Recently, Robert and Michelle King tweeted a juicy spoiler that the series finale will be simply titled "End". It will be aired on May 8, 2016.
