A British sailor was accused of attempting to murder his girlfriend by throwing her overboard knowing she could not swim.

A sailor allegedly threw his girlfriend into a river, knowing that she could not swim, before fleeing the scene in his yacht last month.

The 60-year-old British sailor and the victim, who may also be British, according to The Telegraph, began dating about a year ago before moving onto the yacht together. The couple had been sailing around the world and reportedly experienced "episodes of verbal and physical violence" prior to the incident on the River Tagus near Lisbon, Portugal.

The British sailor allegedly "threw his victim into the river during a row," a witness told Correio da Manha, a Portuguese newspaper, on May 30. He then fled the scene, leaving the woman to be saved by another passing boat.

After relaying the incident to police, the victim was transported to a hospital. Her condition remains unknown. Maritime Police arrested the yachtsman hours later. He was then formally arrested and charged with attempted murder.

Meanwhile, the British sailor's boat, the "Mariner," was seized by police during the ongoing investigation.
