Texas authorities are searching for an unidentified woman who fled after running over a kayaker with a jet ski Memorial Day weekend.
The 18-year-old kayaker, Ava Moore, was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Texas Game Wardens said that the incident happened around 5 p.m. May 25. They said that preliminary details indicate that two people were on a jet ski when they struck Moore.
CBS News Texas reported that witness Lisa Scrabeck was among those who attempted to help the teen and administered CPR.
"She didn't suffer in agony," Scrabeck told CBS News Texas. "It's very tragic, and I extend my deepest condolences to the family. I can't imagine being the parents of this young girl. But one thing I can say is that she didn't suffer from the moment I saw her."
Texas authorities said that, according to witnesses, the woman who operated the jet ski fled with an adult man. In leaving the Lake Grapevine area, the pair struck a vehicle and the Grapevine Police Department are investigating the vehicular hit-and-run.
Ava Moore's family has set up a GoFundMe.
"As The Moore family is grieving the sudden loss of their beautiful daughter/sister, we would like to ask for the communities help in easing the burden of funeral costs for this family. All money will go directly to the family," the page states.
According to the GoFundMe page, Moore was a 2024 graduate of Timber Creek High School, where she was an outstanding student and athlete. She had just returned from Colorado Springs after finishing her first year at the Air Force Preparatory School.
Texas officials have asked that anyone who has information regarding the couple who fled, please contact cidmail@grapevinetexas.gov
