A Nebraska woman was killed in an alleged murder-suicide attempt by her ex-fiancé—just one day after he was released on bond after being jailed for assault and violating a protective order.

Jamie Hagen, 36, was found dead at her home Saturday with multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Nebraska State Patrol. Casey Kindt, 54, who Hagen was formerly engaged to, was also found at the scene with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and is currently receiving treatment for life-threatening injuries, KKTV reported.

Hagen's family said she took every legal step possible to protect herself and her children, including obtaining a restraining order after Kindt allegedly assaulted her and threatened her daughter on December 16, 2024. Kindt was charged with making terroristic threats, third-degree domestic assault, and child abuse.

Kindt first posted bond in January, but was sent back to jail for contacting Hagen upon his release. Prosecutors then sought to have his bond revoked, but Judge C. Jo Petersen instead increased it to $75,000. Kindt posted bail on Friday and allegedly killed Hagen the next day.

"She did everything right, but it didn't really do any good," said Hagen's father, Charles Hagen. "If he'd just stayed in there, this wouldn't have happened."

A juvenile inside the home made the 911 call, police said.

Records show Kindt was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm at the time of the shooting. The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating the case as a homicide.
