Man Insists He 'Had to Stab' His Mother After She Allegedly Tried to Stab Him: Police

A Massachusetts man pled not guilty after allegedly stabbing his mother and stepfather, severely injuring them, claiming that he did so out of self-defense.

29-year-old Paul J. O'Brien was charged with two counts of armed assault to murder on a person at least 60, two counts of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon on a person at least 60, two counts of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury and two counts of assault and battery (domestic), according to a police report from the Stoughton Police Department.

On Sunday evening, O'Brien called police, telling them that "his mother tried to stab him, so he had to stab her," said the police report obtained by MassLive.

Law enforcement responded to North Stoughton Village Apartments on Page Terrace in Stoughton where they found O'Brien's mother lying in a pool of her own blood outside of the bathroom in an apartment on the fifth floor. O'Brien's stepfather was found in the bedroom with stab wounds across his back and torso.

O'Brien was found with his hands covered in blood.

"Please don't hurt me; please don't kill me," O'Brien repeated to law enforcement after being taken into custody.

Both victims were alive and were transported to hospitals in Boston to receive medical care.

O'Brien is being held without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 17.
