Police are revealing eerie new details surrounding the "targeted" killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, according to a report.

Thompson's alleged shooter used a firearm with a silencer, a source told CNBC.

The suspect is described as a white male, who was wearing a black hoodie, black pants, black sneakers with a white trim and a grey backpack.

Thompson, 50, was scheduled to speak at an investor meeting on Wednesday before he was shot outside the Hilton hotel at approximately 6:45 a.m. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition but died from his injuries.

UnitedHealth Group canceled its investor day after reports emerged of the shooting. Thompson led its insurance unit, the largest private health insurer in the nation.

"I'm afraid that we – some of you may know we're dealing with very serious medical situation with one of our team members," UnitedHealth Group staff said during the investor day, according to a transcript obtained by CNBC. "And as a result, I'm afraid we're going to have to bring to a close the event today, which I'm sure you'll understand."
