Authorities arrested a man accused in the slayings of an elderly couple at a California nudist resort.

Next-door neighbor Michael Royce Sparks, 62, has been taken into custody on murder charges for the alleged killings of 79-year-old Daniel Menard and his wife, 73-year-old Stephanie Menard, police in Redlands, California, announced Friday.

"He surrendered voluntarily – I won't say he's been cooperative – after lengthy negotiations," Redlands police spokesperson Carl Baker said, according to CNN.

The victims' bodies have not been located, but "we believe the bodies are on the site of his home," he said.

A motive in the alleged murders remains under investigation.

The couple were last seen at their home Saturday morning, according to police. On Sunday, a friend reported them missing.

"I just want them back," Sandy Marinelli, a longtime friend of the couple, told KCAL-TV. "They don't deserve this. They're just good people. They go to church. They don't deserve any of this."

Investigators recovered the Menards' unlocked vehicle down the road from their residence. Stephanie's purse, along with her and Daniel's cell phones, were found at their home, said police.

Their dog, a small white Shih Tzu named Cuddles, remains missing.
