Biden's Pre-Presidential Conduct Not Grounds for Impeachment, Asserts GOP Senator Mullin

By

In a recent conversation with Newsmax, prominent Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma has iterated that President Biden cannot be impeached over actions preceding his presidential tenure. This clarification significantly narrows down the scope of any potential impeachment proceedings.

Can Biden be Impeached for Pre-presidential Actions? Mullin Says No.

The clarification arises amidst an ongoing House GOP investigation into the business dealings of Biden's family, notably, his son Hunter Biden's affiliations with foreign firms. This probe also covers the period spanning Biden's vice presidency and the immediate aftermath. But, Senator Mullin declares that with regards to any potential misdemeanors leading to impeachment, these acts must've occurred during the sitting President's tenure in office.

Speaking on Newsmax's 'Wake Up America,' Senator Mullin stressed, "What Biden did as vice president or what he did between the two offices may not be impeachable."

Senator Mullin elucidated that a prospective case for impeachment must be convictable, thus indicating that the impeachment bar is set particularly high.

This assertion chimes with the precedent set by previous republican senators, led by Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who chose to acquit former President Trump in connection to the impeachment charge relating to attempting insurrection against the United States in January 2021-chiefly on the grounds that he was no longer in office during the February trial.

Long Road to Conviction in a Democratic-controlled Senate?

This significant stipulation presented by Senator Mullin follows the recent development wherein the House approved a resolution to formally examine whether President Biden improperly capitalized from his son's business transactions with foreign establishments, albeit along party lines.

During a press conference, Hunter Biden emphatically confirmed that his father had no financial involvement in his enterprises. Furthermore, he stated categorically that his father didn't have any role in his work as a practicing lawyer, work engagements with the Ukrainian energy company Burisma, or his association with a Chinese private businessman.

Interestingly, the events under scrutiny by House GOP investigators, terming them as "Biden's influence peddling," mainly transpired between 2014 and 2017, coinciding with Joe Biden's vice-presidential term.

However, other Senate Republicans, like Senate Whip John Thune and Texas Senator John Cornyn, have issued cautionary statements that Biden's conviction remains highly unlikely in a Democrat-led Senate. To achieve this, at least 18 Democratic Senators would need to vote for conviction.
