Every lawyer dreamed to be a partner in the law firm that they work for. However, with the rapid technology advancement, legal profession has changed an it is not how it was before.
In every law firm, there is always hierarchy that determined the ranking order. Title like “Associate Counsel” or “Junior Associate” determine the level of superiority in every law firm. Every lawyer aimed to get the title of “General Counsel” or “Partner” to give them highest superiority level.
However, changes in technology has changed the legal profession as well. According to Lawyers Weekly, the current advancement in technology has put pressure for lawyers to change the way they deliver their services.
Digital age has created disruption in the legal service, which makes lawyers must adapt to the technology and changed its practice and culture. Chief legal and technology services officer at an international commercial law firm Allens in Sydeny, Australia Beth Patterson advised the law firm to change the culture and thinking process.
“Law firms need to embrace some design thinking principles to build a culture that is flexible,” Ms. Patterson said. “They need to embrace multidisciplinary skills to assess technologies to distinguish the hype from the reality.”
One of the recent technology advancement is the machine learning and artificial intelligence. The computer is now able to analyze legal document in the speed much higher than required by human lawyers. According to
CNBC, the lawyer’s profession will be the next profession to be replaced by computers.
The document mining technology platform is currently able to analyze legal documents, provide evidences and details needed for litigation case. Furthermore, the technology is able to review contracts and create them, identifying issue in the contracts and perform due diligence. One of the most advanced is the Contract Intelligence, which will be deployed in JPMorgan in June.
