Senator Tom Cotton Blocks Obama Nominee Responsible to Combat Terrorism and Financial Crimes

By

A Republican led-senator blocked an effort to confirm President Barack Obama's nominee on Wednesday. The U.S. president allegedly nominated a key Treasury post responsible for leading the battle against terrorism and financial crimes.

The Hill reports that democrats tried to secure a vote on Wednesday, however, Senator Tom Cotton, R-Ark objected. This is because Cotton cited the possibility that the Obama administration would ease financial restrictions that prohibit U.S. dollars from being used in transactions with Iran. Cotton strenuously opposed the landmark international deal that curtailed Iran's nuclear program in exchange for sanction relief.

In addition, Senator Cotton was worried about national security that he is blocking President Obama acting under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Adam Szubin from being confirmed to be permanent on the said position.

As Republicans try to convince voters that they are fit to occupy the White House, Senator Tom Cotton literally made it easier for terrorists to get financial resources because he is mad at President Obama.

With that being said, Sherrod Brown, one of the Democrat senators who cast a vote stated, "Republicans need to stop holding our national security apparatus hostage to political demands. We need to allow Adam Szubin and other national security nominees to be approved. The Senate needs to do its job", Daily Mail has cited.

According to Brown County Democrat, the Senate Banking Committee had approved Szubin nomination last month. The committee's chairman, Senator Richard Shelby, R-Ala., had delayed action on Szubin's and all other nominations before his panel, stubbornly refusing to act until winning his re-election primary in early March.

President Barack Obama nominated Adam Szubin a year ago but his nomination was declined since he was caught up in senate politics. Szubin, has served under both Obama and predecessor George W. Bush, has worked in the anti-terror profession in an acting capacity.
