Three people have died and several others wounded following a shooting at Al's Barber Shop on the east side of Detroit on Wednesday night, which was known as a site for gambling, The Associated Press reported.

All total, nine people were hit by gunfire, Detroit police said. 30 people were reportedly gambling there.

"We're not sure if this was over a bad debt. We have no idea. We know it's a barber shop and gambling has occurred in this location," said Police Chief James Craig at a press briefing.

Police were looking for at least two people believed to have carried out the shooting, saying that two cars pulled up and people inside the vehicles started shooting at each other, news reports said.

"I can't even imagine what would cause this type of violence," Craig said.

The victims have since been transported to multiple hospitals, including Detroit Receiving. One of the victims is listed in critical condition, the police said.

"It is certainly tragic and it rises up to one of Detroit's more violent incidents. It is certainly a violent act and what I am calling, urban terrorism."

The shooter had fled the scene, but later was apprehended in Rochester, part of the metropolitan Detroit. He "is being held on an unrelated felonious assault warrant and is considered a person of interest In the barbershop shooting but has not been charged. He has been held by officials on the charge outlined in the warrant," Los Angeles Times reported.
